INVITATION TO THE REPRESENTATIVES OF THE MEDIA

 What: Organized under the theme For Africa, from Africa, the forum, African Business and Human Rights Forum, will focus on recent developments in responsible business practices and discuss strategies to reduce the adverse impact of business on human rights and the environment.

It will also explore African perspectives and solutions to promoting greater corporate accountability, to catalyse action by governments to promote human rights and to accelerate progress toward regional and global agendas on sustainable development, including the AU Agenda 2063 and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Who: The African Union and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), and the UN Working Group on Business and Human Rights (UNWG)

Why:    The Forum aims to facilitate a robust and multi-stakeholder dialogue based on the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs) that will foster joint action to prevent, mitigate and remediate business-related human rights and environmental abuses. Participants from government, civil society organizations, business, national and regional human rights institutions, and academia from across Africa are expected to be in attendance.

 

Expected Outcome:

  • Sustain momentum 
  • Promote policy coherence at the national and regional level, including the adoption of the AU policy on business and human rights
  • Assess progress made in implementing the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs)
  • Exchange and learn from positive practices and challenges
