What:          The Department of Political Affairs, Peace and Security (PAPS) of the African Union under the Silencing the guns Unit, is organizing a high level seminar on “Art, Culture, and Heritage as levers to Silencing the guns in Africa”.

Time:           Official Opening of the Seminar at 14:00

Where:        Accra, Ghana


Who:  Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ghana, Minister of Culture, Arts and Tourism of Ghana and Political Affairs, Peace and Security Department Commissioner will open the Seminar. It shall bring together African artists from the five sub-regions as well as AUC representatives to address the mutually reinforcing relationship between aspiration 4 and 5 in the pursue of the achievement of the Agenda 2063 and the Africa we want.?

Why: Artists are in a vantage position to give visibility on country-level strategies for Silencing the guns, as they can communicate effectively with local communities, in particular young people, women, children and the grassroots generally.

Objectives: Primarily, the event will bring together African artists from the five sub-regions, to sensitize them on the flagship project of Silencing the guns and the importance of promoting the culture of peace in Africa. Furthermore, the discussions will also offer a great perspective on peace and security analyses and on complex dynamics that have the propensity to influence peace and conflict resolution initiatives to succeed. It serves an opportunity to invite artists to join the initiative and help them in identifying key activities that they could undertake in their respective communities, environments and countries.

Expected outcomes

(a)   Increased number of artists with understanding of the causes of conflicts and the various mechanisms of conflict prevention;

(b)   Build Comprehensive database of trained African Artists on Silencing the Guns in Africa;

(c)    Develop advocacy and sensitization programmes for artists on silencing the guns Initiative;

(d) Promote/enhance closer cooperation amongst artists, civil society (Women, Youth and Children), media and communities in various AU member states for the implementation of the Silencing the guns agenda (Aspirations 3 and 4 of the Agenda 2063);

(e)  Nominate/select one artist in each region to champion the culture of peace.
