Fiona Lortan is the Acting Director, Conflict Management. Ms. Lortan hails from Durban, South Africa. She studied at the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal, Durban, and at the University of Cambridge in the UK, and graduated with an M.Phil in Social and Political Theory.

Ms Lortan joined the Organization of African Unity in May 2002, one month before it was transformed into the African Union. She has worked in numerous positions in the Peace and Security Department, including as focal point for small arms and light weapons, AU-UN partnership, and the AU Peace Fund. She also participated in the AU mediation following the post-election violence in Kenya in 2007-8, as a member of the team supporting the AU Panel of Eminent Persons, headed by Kofi Annan, as well as a member of the mediation team supporting the AU High Level Implementation Panel on Sudan and South Sudan, headed by President Thabo Mbeki, from 2010-2014.
